2023 Historic Preservation Conference -Harlem and the Future 2: Preserving Culture & Sustaining Historic Character in a Changing Environment

Historic Preservation Conference, “Harlem and the Future 2: Preserving Culture & Sustaining Historic Character in a Changing Environment” will take place Saturday, June 10 from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm at The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture in New York.

The conference will discuss the current state of “housing, neighborhood character, cultural identity, and houses of worship in a changing environment of city policies, development pressures, and displacement at the intersection of historic preservation.” The event will target issues with affordable housing, the preservation and rehabilitation of HDFCs, co-ops and homeownership, and the importance of the creative arts as a neighborhood stabilizer and economic driver.

A breakout session on Financing Historic Preservation Properties is scheduled for those seeking answers to specific questions or guidance.

New Workshop: Historic Wood Window Restoration, Identification, and Maintenance

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Center for the Humanities (MARCH) and the New Jersey Historic Trust are co-sponsoring a new workshop titled “Historic Wood Window Restoration, Identification, and Maintenance.” The workshop will take place in person at Ohio House (4700 States Drive, Philadelphia, PA 19131) on June 10, 2023, from 9:00 AM-1:00 PM.

From MARCH: Senior staff from the building conservation team at the Fairmount Park Conservancy will share best practices for restoring and maintaining traditional wood windows. Anatomy of old window components, weatherization, product recommendations, lead paint capture, and how-to demonstrations will be shared from the viewpoint of preservation trades professionals. This workshop is meant to add clarity to common wood window issues, as well as the process and materials needed for each type of repair. Audience: preservation students, design professionals, HARB members, contractors and old house owners. This workshop will also prove helpful to anyone evaluating window restoration contractors for an upcoming project.
